Nell Scott, professionally known as Asrai, is a singer, songwriter, producer, and audio engineer with an interest in creating magical and emotionally moving music. She is currently attending the University of Central Missouri in pursuit of a degree in Music Technology in order to further her understanding of music production. She immersed herself in every aspect of music creation—from composition and performance to recording and post-production. Nell is very passionate about collaborating with other artists to make beautiful art. She also cares deeply about helping people write the music that explains what they may fear to say aloud or what they may not be able to directly explain.
She showed promise of being a vocalist and performer from a young age. She has had experience being in various choirs, bands, and other ensembles for over ten years, as well as doing many solo performances. She has won many awards and scholarships as a result of her talent and hard work. Nell wrote and performed her first original song at just thirteen at a variety show, and found her passion as a songwriter and performer. She has gone on to perform locally with her jazz combo, Serenova, and internationally with the UCM Concert Choir. These ensembles have given her a broad musical perspective by challenging her with pieces that range from minimalist choral pieces to golden age musical theatre.
She draws inspiration from her intense emotions, fantasy novels, folklore, and her background in jazz music. Nell’s music has themes of deep sadness, self-hatred, and forbidden love, with an emphasis on storytelling. She pushes the boundaries of singer-songwriter music with her raw, but poetic lyrics and ambient instrumentals. Her first album titled, Once Upon a Time…The End, will be released next year. Some genres that have an influence on her upcoming album are folk, alt-pop, alt-rock, jazz, and New Wave.
